Note to hypnotherapists:
Here’s what you need to do if you want your hypnotherapy services to be claimable from medical aids in South Africa:
1. Check Medical Aid Recognition of Hypnotherapy
• Most medical aids in South Africa don’t automatically cover hypnotherapy.
• Some may cover it if provided by a registered medical professional (psychologist, medical doctor, or registered counsellor) with a valid practice number.
2. Get Registered with a Recognized Professional Body
• You need to be registered with a body recognized by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).
• Hypnotherapy alone is not directly recognized by HPCSA unless you’re also a psychologist or medical practitioner.
• Under AHPCSA, some complementary therapies can be recognized but hypnotherapy is often excluded unless combined with other therapies.
3. Obtain a Practice Number
• The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) issues practice numbers.
• To get one, you must:
• Be registered with a recognized professional council (HPCSA, AHPCSA, or another BHF-approved body).
• Apply directly to the BHF for a practice number.
• Without this number, clients cannot submit claims to medical aids.
4. Partner with a Registered Practitioner
• If you are not eligible for your own practice number:
• Collaborate with psychologists, GPs, or other BHF-registered practitioners.
• Offer hypnotherapy as part of their broader service, billed under their practice number.
5. Issue Correct Invoices
• Invoices must include:
• Your practice number
• ICD-10 codes (diagnostic codes)
• Detailed treatment description
• Date and duration of sessions
• Use BHF-compliant invoice templates.
6. Educate Your Clients
• Inform clients upfront:
• Whether your services are covered.
• Which medical aids may reimburse and under what conditions.
• Provide assistance with claim submissions.
7. Direct Medical Aid Engagement
• Contact medical aid companies directly.
• Ask:
• Which hypnotherapy-related services they cover.
• If they accept claims from practitioners with your specific qualifications.
• Some may have internal exceptions or require pre-authorisation.
Practical Reality:
Most medical aids in South Africa will not cover hypnotherapy unless provided by a psychologist, doctor, or BHF-registered provider.
Your clearest path is to either become multi-registered or work within a registered professional’s practice.
If you only offer hypnotherapy, you may need to focus on cash clients or create wellness packages not reliant on medical aid reimbursement.
